Labour Minister, Chris Ngige Swallows Own Words On 'Surplus Doctors', Claims He Was Misquoted

Image
Chris Ngige has reversed his comment that Nigeria has ‘surplus doctors’ and he was, thus, not worried about Nigerian doctors leaving the country to go practice in other climes. After public condemnation, the labour minister alluded to Nigeria falling short of the World Health Organisation’s benchmark ratio of one doctor to six hundred patients, saying he was misquoted. He however maintained that every other thing he said was an “existential reality, useful and constructive fact.” Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, Mr Ngige had said Nigeria has more than enough doctors to cater for its health needs and can even export. The comment drew rage from many Nigerians, especially medical professionals who have been struggling to tackle the challenge of ‘brain drain’ in the health industry. “No, I am not worried… we have a surplus… “If you have a surplus, you export…”, Mr Ngige had said while responding to a question regarding Nigerian doctors who wis...

Image
The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has found the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen guilty of violation of the code of conduct for public officers. CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar, in a judgment on Thursday, held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Onnoghen is guilty. CCT says it has jurisdiction to try Onnoghen made false asset declaration by deliberately omitting to declare the five domiciliary accounts he maintained with Standard Chartered Bank, and in which huge deposits were found. The tribunal after convicting him, ordered among others, his removal from office, barred him from holding public office for the next 10 years and confiscated the funds in the five accounts, which the tribunal said should be forfeited to the Federal Government

Klopp Says Liverpool Will Not Be Affected By 2014 Chelsea Defeat

Image
Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool's dramatic defeat to Chelsea in April 2014 will have no bearing on Sunday's Premier League clash between the two sides. Brendan Rodgers' Reds faced Chelsea at Anfield needing just seven points from their remaining three games to win the title. Chelsea, then managed by Jose Mourinho, took all three points, though, with Demba Ba taking advantage of Steven Gerrard's slip and Willian scoring late on to all but hand the title to Manchester City. Liverpool are again locked in a battle with City for the title this season and go into this weekend's game two points ahead of their rivals at the summit, although Pep Guardiola's side do have a game in hand. Klopp – who was crowned Premier League manager of the month for March on Friday – is adamant that his players will not be affected by that defeat five years ago and believes a partisan Anfield crowd could be decisive in what many believe is their toughest remaining fix...

The Single Mother Stigma: 4 Common Misconceptions That Need To Go Away Now

Image
The single mother stigma is damaging to those it pretends to encompass. Being unprepared for single-motherhood does not mean you’re failing at life. It does not mean you will leach off the welfare system. And it does not mean you will raise your children to be criminals. It’s time to put these distorted perceptions to rest. Single moms are an accident. This belief is a multidimensional failure and another perfect example of a larger problem being blamed on women. Statistics certainly don’t help the case. According to the the most recent data, about half of the nation’s population of single mothers have never been married. A little more than half of the women who make up the nation’s single mothers are under the age of 24, and 15% percent are under the age of 20. One could examine these numbers and make assumptions that fit their shallow agendas. But what isn’t being recognized is that more than half of the single mothers in the U.S. are widowed, divorced, or separat...

The Senate on Tuesday adjourned plenary till April 9, to allow its Committee on Appropriation conclude work on the 2019 Budget. This followed the inability of the Committee to submit its report on the budget as proposed when the Senate adjourned on March 20. Announcing the committee’s position, its Vice Chairman, Sen. Sonni Ogbuoji, said less than 10 committees out of over 60 had submitted their budget reports to it, and urged the Upper Chamber for a two weeks extension. “Our report is not ready because some committees are yet to submit their reports. “For now we have less than 10 committees that have submitted their reports. “We actually requested that they submit their reports last week, but since we do not have the reports we want to extend it to Friday this week latest. “So we are asking for two weeks. If they submit by Friday the reports should be ready in two weeks’ time. “I plead that the House empowers the committee to go with the Executive position fo...
